Why You Need More Omega-3

Did you grow up with a fridge full of low-fat yogurt, margarine and skim milk?  Do you crave fatty foods but fear they’re not good for you?   Do you find fats confusing?   I sure do! The advice on “what’s good” keeps changing. But there’s one thing most nutrition experts agree on: the health-giving benefits of omega-3 fats.

Before zeroing in on what omega-3’s are, and why these immune-loving lipids are so good for the immune system, first let’s look at the importance of dietary fats.

Fats are unique nutrients in that they are a long-lasting source of energy. You need them in order to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Most importantly, membranes  around each of your 30 trillion cells require healthy dietary fats to do their job well. That protective fatty wrapper keeps bad stuff out, like viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and toxins. And the same membrane lets good stuff in, like water, oxygen and other nutrients needed for cellular function. It’s like a trillion bodyguards… for your body!
